Sydney #1

We awoke to a new port this morning, Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Emerald Princess beat us here by a few minutes and we were followed into the area by the Volendam. Since there are only two spots at the dock, Volendam guests took tender boats ashore.

We waited until lunch time to disembark, partly because of some unexpected late morning showers and partly because sitting on our balcony and watching birds fly was as entertaining as anything we hoped to see in this small town. I used this time to plan our time in Boston on Saturday and Sunday. Occasionally I’d look over to the shore and see a handful of cars lined up at the side of the road looking at us.

As we walked to the place we had identified for lunch, we passed groups of people clogging the sidewalks listening to walking-tour guides tell the story of this Sydney, the original. (This Sydney was founded in 1785; Sydney, Australia was founded in 1788). We could see our destination a long way off because of the long line extending to the sidewalk. With the rain showers (almost, as it turns out) past us, they were opening up more of the outside parts of the restaurant. Soon we were walked to a nice table inside. I considered getting the poutine, but the seafood boil just looked too tempting. I made the right choice. This is a meal I will remember a long time.

so good! Well worth the wait.

Tomorrow we have a long excursion in Halifax planned, a bus ride to the Bay of Fundy. We’re promised rain much of the day. We’ll see.
